There is no doubt that mold allergies can cause many problematic symptoms, including respiratory discomfort, drowsiness, and chronic fatigue. However, one of the most surprising symptoms of a mold allergy is chronic hair loss.
Hair loss in someone with a mold allergy is not caused directly by mold. Rather, their body’s autoimmune response to mold spores causes their hair follicles to die, which then causes the hair in those follicles to fall out.
In cases where hair loss happens because of a mold allergy, exposure to mold spores causes the body’s autoimmune system to respond by producing histamine. This substance is meant to provide protection from the mold spores and eliminate them from the circulatory and respiratory systems.
However, histamine also causes inflammation of the capillaries, including those surrounding the hair follicles. Once inflamed, the capillaries do not provide enough oxygenated blood to keep hair follicles alive. Once the follicles die, hair loss occurs.
If exposure to mold spores continues over an extended period, this condition will become serious and cause a significant amount of hair loss. However, sudden or chronic hair loss is not necessarily caused by a mold allergy – anyone experiencing this health issue should always consult with a trusted physician.
